All poor communities need, are the basics you enjoy: A tale of two strange bedfellows in Lagos Island

By Paul Ukpabio, community pix by Biodun Adeyewa and internet pix of Banana Island

The pictures indeed show a large contrast between these two communities in Lagos Island. While both are on the edge of the waters, the residents live separate lifestyles. Banana Island is for the exclusive rich. While the other is for the exclusively poor?

 The saying goes
that, ‘no condition is permanent’ but for the poor residents of some of the riverine communities in Eti-Osa local government area of Lagos State such as Otodogbame, these harsh conditions have come to stay!

There is always one bad news after another for residents of these unfortunate communities, and for years, they have grown to accept such as their lot. Only in February, a strange disease set in and ravaged the people.

The standard of living exposes the residents to harsh human conditions that leave each person on a survival thread only the divine can understand.

Will there ever be an escape or succour for these lot?
