Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has given the banking sector a big pass mark. The president declared that Nigeria has the best creative and innovative banking sector in Africa. The president said this much when he received the Governing Council of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) led by the chairman, Dr Uche Olowu, at the State House, Abuja yesterday.
It was a great commendation
for his guests and Nigerians in general because President Buhari is not known
to throw in undeserved praise to anyone or group of people who do not deserve
it. The President has in time past said that Nigerian youths are lazy and he
meant it!
So
the President’s positive comment this time around, indeed cheered up the entire
members of the Governing Council of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of
Nigeria (CIBN). The President did not stop there; he added that proudly that, Nigerian
bankers have not only proved themselves in Nigeria alone, but across the entire
continent and in other parts of the world.
“I am proud when
I visit African countries and see posters or branches of Nigerian banks. I will
ask all your members to continue to be great ambassadors of Nigeria as you
expand within Africa and beyond.”
In response to President
Mohammadu Buhari’s ‘sweet’ commendations, Dr Uche Olowu who spoke on behalf of the
members of the Governing Council, declared the institute’s support for the
current policy by the federal Government to close Nigeria’s land borders. He
said the policy would protect and promote ‘Made in Nigeria’ products as well as
prevent the country from being used as a dumpsite for sub-standard products and
other illicit cross border activities.
Olowu
expressed gratitude to the president for the various interventions made by this
government, to drive inclusive growth through various initiatives in the
country.
