Umo Eno To Train Traditional Midwives for Efficient Service Delivery

By Uwemedimoh Umanah

PUE’s administration from 2023 will accord traditional birth attendants a sense of belonging through effective training and proper integration into the state’s medical system.

A survey carried out by Idongesit Eshiet, a Professor of Gender Studies at University of Lagos reveals that more women in riverine communities of Akwa Ibom use TBAs during childbirth, even after attending antenatals in public hospitals. Reeling out his programmes for traditional midwives in the state, PUE said:

‘We will give you a sense of belonging by bringing you in, training you and putting you under medical supervision. We have midwives  in every local government area and we intend to engage you meaningfully instead of putting you away and undermining your value...’

The training of TBAs in the state by PUE’s administration will enhance quality partnership between TBAs and trained medical personnel, and ultimately boost their morale for effective service delivery.
